The Best Places to Visit in Jamaica for Couples

By Karlie Place

What was supposed to be seven days on Negril Beach turned into two weeks circling the whole island — and four separate trips to Jamaica since. I've now stayed at every single one of the four Couples Resorts, plus the private villas at Idle Awhile, and I get the same question in my DMs constantly: what are the best places to visit in Jamaica for couples? So here's the honest, no-sponsor-fluff answer, ranked from someone who actually slept in all the beds.

The best places to visit in Jamaica for couples — turquoise Caribbean water and palm trees at a couples resort beach

This is the post I wish I'd had before my first trip. I'm going to walk you through where to stay in Jamaica for couples (all five properties, ranked, with report cards), the best things to do once you're there, the Negril-versus-Ocho Rios question everyone asks, and yes — the nude beach question I get more than any other. Every property below is one I've personally stayed at or spent real time in. Let's get into it.

The Quick Answer

If you want the one-line version: Couples Sans Souci in Ocho Rios is the most romantic and the one I'd book again tomorrow. Idle Awhile Villas in Negril is the move if you want a private, fully staffed villa instead of a big resort. And if you're picking a region, Negril is for sunsets and Seven Mile Beach, while Ocho Rios is for dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and lush jungle. Everything below is the long version.

A quick note on what these resorts are, because it matters for couples specifically: all four Couples Resorts are adults-only, all-inclusive, and — true to the name — built for two. Meals, drinks, water sports, land sports, airport transfers, and most excursions are included, so once you arrive you rarely pull out your wallet. They sit along Jamaica's north coast between Ocho Rios and Negril. If you want a kid-free, romance-first trip, this is the category to look at.

Where to Stay in Jamaica for Couples

Here are all five properties I've stayed at, ranked, with the honest report card for each. I'll start with my favorite and work down.

1. Couples Sans Souci — the most romantic

As soon as we arrived at Couples Sans Souci in Ocho Rios, it was clear this is the premier Couples location. Mineral pools overlook a crystal-clear bay, and the property wraps around multiple peninsulas to create one of the most exclusive resort experiences I've ever had. The newly remodeled G-block rooms — double-sided showers, backlit closets, wicker accents, clean minimalist design — are a fresh take on the usual nautical resort look, and they're becoming the norm across the suites. I've been back four times. It's the one I'd book again tomorrow.

The full story of my stay in the Hibiscus Oasis Spa Villa — the clifftop infinity pool, the in-villa couples massage cove, the private chef dinner — is in my full Couples Sans Souci review. And if you care about photography, this resort is the most photogenic place I've shot in the Caribbean — I broke down every shot location in my photographer's guide to Sans Souci.

2. Idle Awhile Villas — best private villa in Negril

If you don't want a big resort at all, this is the answer. Idle Awhile Villas sits directly on Seven Mile Beach in Negril, and instead of a hotel you get a fully staffed private villa — personal chef, butler who doubles as your bartender, housekeeper, and 24-hour security. We stayed in the three-bedroom Nasberry Villa and had more space than we knew what to do with. Complimentary paddleboards, kayaks, a Hobie Cat sailboat, and snorkel gear come with it, and you're a 60-second walk from the clearest water in Negril.

This one needs its own post to do it justice, so I wrote one: my full Idle Awhile Villas review, including the villa lineup, the all-inclusive pricing, and how the Villas compare to the Beach property next door. If you're a group, a girlfriend trip, or a couple who wants total privacy with a chef, start there.

3. Couples Negril — classic laid-back beachfront

We loved our rooms at Couples Negril. Less than ten minutes from the Negril villas, this resort has a totally different feel — a beautiful green-washed exterior like the patina on antique copper, show-stopping pools, and a swim-up bar. Our top-floor corner room had a huge bathroom, a Jacuzzi, a balcony, and a white hammock for lounging with a sunset view over the beach. Four on-site restaurants cover a range of cuisine. This is the one for the classic, low-key Negril beach vibe.

4. Couples Tower Isle — youngest, liveliest crowd

Couples Tower Isle, the second Ocho Rios location, skewed to the youngest crowd of all our stays. Two huge pools with grand palm-and-ocean views, a smaller-but-beautiful beach, and some of my favorite meals of the whole trip — we had dinner in an overwater bungalow one night and on the resort's private island another. The spa is gorgeous: white walls lined with terracotta pots around a long oval blue pool. If you want the most social, lively Couples property, this is it.

5. Couples Swept Away — for the active couple

Couples Swept Away is a gorgeous property on Negril's Seven Mile Beach and the only Couples location I didn't sleep at — but I spent an afternoon there and explored the spa. It's known for its enormous 10-acre sports and fitness complex (the largest in Jamaica) and is a favorite among loyal, returning, active guests. If your idea of a romantic trip includes tennis at sunrise and a real gym, this is your match. You can browse it alongside the other Negril options on the Negril resorts list.

Negril vs. Ocho Rios: Which Is Better for Couples?

This is the decision that actually matters once you've picked the brand, and it comes down to the kind of trip you want.

Choose Negril for the famous seven-mile stretch of white-sand beach, the best sunsets on the island, Rick's Cafe cliff jumping, and a flatter, beachier, more laid-back energy. This is where Seven Mile Beach, Idle Awhile, Couples Negril, and Couples Swept Away all are.

Choose Ocho Rios for dramatic green cliffs, waterfalls like Dunn's River Falls, lush jungle paths, and a more secluded, scenic feel. This is home to Couples Sans Souci and Couples Tower Isle. The drive between the two coasts is roughly three to four hours, so if you want both, build in the travel time — or split your stay, which Couples makes easy with their resort-swap program between sister properties.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica for Couples

The best places to visit in Jamaica for couples aren't only the resorts — it's what you do between the beach naps. Here are the experiences worth leaving the lounge chair for. (I book island activities through GetYourGuide when something isn't already included with the resort.)

Cliff jumping into blue water at Ricks Cafe Negril — a top thing to do in Jamaica for couples

Cliff jump at Rick's Cafe. Some of the bluest water I've ever seen. Standing on the cliff looking down at blue water, black rocks, and catamarans lined up just outside the bay is such a vibe. There are two jumping levels (three if you count the insane high perch the locals use). The lower two were plenty of a thrill for me.

Sail a catamaran down the coast. We sailed from our Negril villa to Rick's Cafe by catamaran — the captain pulled right up to the buoy line and we swam to shore. If you're bringing a camera or phone, get a dry bag. Totally worth it.

Swim the Blue Hole. An iconic stop about an hour from Negril by driver. We arrived at 10am on a Saturday in February expecting crowds — nope, just us and the locals. There's an entry fee of about $20 per person, plus a mineral spring and other recreation. The roads are wild, so I highly recommend hiring a private driver rather than self-driving. For airport pickup and around-island transfers, Welcome Pickups is the painless option.

Walk Seven Mile Beach & catch a bonfire. Seven miles of white sand and crystal water. We had quiet morning walks and saw huge beach bonfires lit for the nightly activities. Parasailing, kayaking, glass-bottom boat tours — it's all here. We hit Margaritaville on our last evening, and I believe it's the flagship location.

Other couples favorites: Dunn's River Falls (the climbable waterfall near Ocho Rios — I regret not going), the Luminous Lagoon, Frenchman's Cove, and slow sunrise beach yoga, which is free and the best way to start a day on the island.

Are There Nude Beaches in Jamaica? (The Question I Get Most)

A lot of people ask me at Karlie Place: are there nude beaches in Jamaica? And honestly — one of the biggest reasons couples book these specific resorts is the clothing-optional beach sections. So let me just answer it plainly.

Yes. Among the Couples Resorts, you'll find au naturel beach sections at Couples Tower Isle, Couples Swept Away, and Couples Sans Souci. At Sans Souci the clothing-optional beach is actually the best place to watch the sunset on the property, and it's so popular with returning guests that it stays open year-round. These areas are tucked away from the main family-style beaches, clearly marked, and entirely opt-in — so whether it's your thing or not, it never gets in the way of the rest of the resort. I'd just rather you hear it here than be surprised by it.

How to Get There & Getting Around

You'll fly into Montego Bay (MBJ) for all of these resorts. If you book one of the main chains, there's usually a dedicated lounge past customs where they take your bags and arrange your transfer. Negril is over an hour from the airport — we stopped on the roadside on the way and bought fresh coconuts for $1 each, cracked open with a machete. Peak Caribbean welcome.

For Ocho Rios properties, round-trip transfers from Montego Bay are included with Couples. If you're piecing together your own transport between coasts or out to excursions, prebook a transfer through Welcome Pickups rather than negotiating roadside — the driving here has its own unwritten rules.

A Note on Eating in Jamaica (If You're Vegetarian)

I'm mostly plant-based, and I'll be honest: Jamaican cuisine is heavily seafood- and chicken-based, so I sometimes had to hunt for options. The jerk tofu I had one night was incredible, and the national dish, ackee, is a vegetable that can be cooked sweet or savory. The Couples resorts and the Idle Awhile chef both adapted beautifully when I asked — Idle Awhile's private chef built every meal around our preferences with zero menu repetition. If you have dietary needs, the staffed-villa route makes it almost effortless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best Couples Resort in Jamaica?

For most couples, Couples Sans Souci in Ocho Rios — it's the most romantic and scenic, and my personal pick. Choose Tower Isle for the liveliest crowd, Couples Negril for classic laid-back beachfront, and Swept Away if you're active and want the big fitness complex.

Is Jamaica safe for couples?

The all-inclusive resort areas — Negril, Ocho Rios, and Montego Bay — are well set up for tourists and felt safe to me across multiple trips. Stick to resort areas or go with a local guide for excursions and you'll be fine.

How many days do you need in Jamaica?

A minimum of 7 days to really feel the island, especially if you want both Negril and Ocho Rios. We did two weeks and could have stayed longer. Remember the coasts are 3–4 hours apart.

Do Couples Resorts include everything?

Yes — all four are fully all-inclusive: food, drinks, water sports, land sports, airport transfers, and most excursions. Premium extras like spa treatments cost more, but day to day you really don't need your wallet.

Ready to book?

My pick: Couples Sans Souci, Ocho Rios

The most romantic of the four, and the one I've returned to four times.
